“Sick?”

Rodney’s voice was choked, small. Terrified. “Like, dying sick?”

Carson worried his lip for one horrible minute before answering. “Possibly.”

Rodney’s mouth drew into a thin line. “How long?” Carson met his eyes, face filled with pity. “I don’t know, Rodney.” Rodney slammed a fist down, shaking the contents of the counter, a vial shattering on the floor. “Don’t give me that. Just... Please, Carson. How much longer?”

“I’m sorry.”

In the mess hall, eyes followed him wherever he went. Elizabeth had given him a hug. Everyone stopped him in the halls to tell him how sorry they were. Zelenka, Lorne, Teyla. Even Ronon had clapped him on the shoulder sympathetically.

That all just made it that much worse, that much more real.

He settled into bed but couldn’t sleep, cold and worried.

It all happened so fast.

The world spun dizzyingly fast around him, the white of the infirmary closing in as people ran, pulling and shoving at him, rushing desperately.

He could feel himself crying but it was as if it were someone else, as if he wasn’t really there.

And then it was over.

He looked down at the still, fragile body on the hospital bed.

“John.”
